It’s an uphill climb for the Walters State men’s basketball team in the 2019-20 season. The Senators open the year ranked No. 25 in the newly-released NJCAA men’s basketball poll Monday.

The Senators claim the 25th spot with seven points in the ranking system, edging out Arizona Western, Southern Idaho, Georgia Highlands, New Mexico Junior College and Shelton State (Ala.), all receiving one point apiece.

It’s a significant step for WSCC as they were unranked all of last season. Walters State finished 23-8 in 2018-19, winning six straight to cap the regular season and claim the TCCAA regular season title.

The Senators were eliminated in the Region VII tournament by Roane State on March 3, 82-78,

Four-time and defending national champion Vincennes (Ind.) tops the poll at No. 1. Ranger (Texas) is two and Florida SouthWestern State is No. 3.

Rounding out the Top 10 are John A. Logan (Ill.), Eastern Florida State, Indian Hills (Iowa), Chipola (Fla.), South Plains (Texas) and Hutchinson (Kan.).

Walters State opens its season in the Senators Classic at ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium Nov. 1-2. The face off against Christian Community College on Nov. 1 and Caldwell Community College on Nov. 2.
