KINGSPORT — Jacob Gossett kickstarted Morristown East with a single in his first at-bat, and Carson Shockley went the distance on the mound as the Hurricanes topped Daniel Boone 6-4 at Hunter Wright Stadium on Thursday.

Gossett went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for East (8-9), with Kyle Compton and Shockley both collecting two hits while Bradley Edwards had one.

Compton singled home Gossett to pull East even, and Edwards lined a two-out base hit to left which sent home David Ellison and Braxton Hanshaw to put the ‘Canes up 3-1 after one.

Gossett made it 4-1 in the second when Compton reached on an error by the Trailblazers (10-7), who pulled within 4-3 in the top of the sixth.

But East responded as Compton sent home Gossett with a ground-ball double and Landon Grizzell crossed home thanks to a catcher error in the home half.

Despite allowing a leadoff single in the seventh, Shockley (3-1) kept the damage to a minimum by forcing three straight groundouts to end the game. He struck out three and gave up just one earned run on five hits as East committed two errors.

Preston Miller took the loss for Daniel Boone, giving up three earned runs on five hits through the first 1.2 innings.

Ben Allen went 2-for-3 to lead the Trailblazers at the plate.
