Otto Purkey

Otto Purkey, 73, of the Alpha community, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at his residence. He was a member of Alpha Baptist Church.

Otto served for 28 years with the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Department, starting as a patrol officer in 1978 and retiring as a two-term sheriff in 2006. He previously served as a foreman for the Hamblen County Highway Department and a driver for Roadway Express. He enjoyed a long retirement, spending his days with family, friends, and trading golf carts, lawn mowers, tractors, and anything else with wheels.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Vada Royston Purkey; father, Louis Everett Purkey; sisters, Laura Robeson and Helen Nicholson; and brother, Larry Purkey.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Purkey; sons, Bryan (April) Purkey and Todd (Tammy) Davidson; grandsons, Bryson Purkey and Zak (Morgan) Davidson; granddaughters, Brittany (Levi) Beckelheimer and Courtney (Kyle) Shute; great-grandchildren, Rylan, Ilana, Kylah, and Stella; brothers, Junior Purkey and David (Pamela) Purkey; and several nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the University of Tennessee Medical Center staff and the caregivers from Avalon Hospice, particularly Miranda and Katrina.

Friends may pay their respects 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Friday, January 15 at Alder Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held noon, Saturday, January 16 at Sunderland Cemetery in Talbott, with honors conducted by the Joint Sheriff’s/Police Honor Guard, and officiated by Rev. Shane Pierce.
