An 88-year-old Morristown woman was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center Monday afternoon after she was struck by an open door of an out-of-control car that was rolling backwards, according to the Morristown Police Department.

Beverly McClellan, who lives on Kensington Drive in the Lochmere subdivision, remained hospitalized in a regular room this morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The woman’s husband, 90-year-old Eugene McClellan, had backed their Toyota Prius out of the garage and was waiting for his wife to enter the vehicle when the mishap occurred around 1:10 p.m., according to officer Zach Jones.

When Mr. McClellan leaned across the passenger seat to help his wife inside the car, his foot slipped off the brake pedal and rolled backwards. Mrs. McClellan fell from the car and the open passenger-side door struck her on the head, according to a crash report, which states the vehicle came to rest across Kensington Drive.
