A Cocke County woman was found dead Thursday morning beside her wrecked pickup truck off East Highway 25/70 in Cocke County.

The crash was discovered by a passing motorist at 8:05 a.m., just east of the Bobaroosa Saloon.

Trooper Joshua Roberts of the Tennessee Highway Patrol identified the victim as Jessica Knight, 42, of Del Rio, who was operating a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado.

Emergency personnel found the wrecked truck at the bottom of a 30-foot embankment.

Roberts said Knight was traveling east on Highway 25/70 and attempted to negotiate a curve to the right. The vehicle crossed onto the westbound shoulder, where it made contact with a large boulder. Upon striking the boulder, the vehicle went back across the roadway, off the eastbound side and over the embankment. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and both vehicle and driver came to rest down the embankment.

Roberts said in his opinion, a seatbelt would have made a difference.

There had been heavy rain throughout Wednesday night, and Cocke County Chief Deputy Derrick Woods said it is undetermined when the crash occurred. He said when the truck was found, the engine was cold.
