Woman dies in Friday crash

A Morristown woman died in a T-Bone crash Friday at the intersection of MLK Boulevard and Highway 160.

A 79-year-old Morristown woman died Friday and her husband was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center following a T-Bone crash at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Highway 160 Friday afternoon.

Gladys Helton died a the scene of the crash after driving her car in front of an oncoming vehicle, authorities said.

Her husband, Joe Helton, 87, was taken to UT but his status was unavailable by press time Saturday.

According to the Morristown Police Department, Glady Helton was Southbound on MLK before she stopped at the intersection with 160 Friday about noon before attempting to cross the highway.

In an attempt to cross over into the southbound lanes of 160, she drove her 2003 Honda Accord across the highway and into the path of a black BMW driving by 19-year-old Gracie Thompson of Morristown.

The BMW struck the accord and both cars went into the median of the roadway.

Thompson was not injured in the crash.

No charges are being filed in the crash at this time, according to the report.
