A new gastroenterology practice recently opened in Morristown, but the doctor has more than 24 years of experience with Morristown patients.

Dr. Siva Maran has practiced in Morristown since 1996. Maran recently joined Tennova Health Gastroenterology at its Morristown office at 705 North High Street.

“I’ve been practicing here since July, 1995,” Maran said. “I finished 24 years in July. There was a need for a gastroenterologist in Newport, so they asked me to join there.”

Maran’s office is based in Morristown, but he does surgeries in Newport and at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City. Both hospitals are owned by Tennova Health.

“Collin McRae (Chief Executive Officer at Jefferson Memorial Hospital) has been very kind to me,” Maran said. “Because I’ve been here 24 years, we try to do the best gastroenterology as much as possible. We try to spend time with the patients.”

Maran indicated that his practice is a team effort.

“My staff has been with me a long time. Opal Caldwell has been with me for 10 years and is an expert with Hepatitis C patients,” he said. “Hepatitis has a 99 percent cure rate. Office Manager Tonya Brewer has been with me for 23 years. Receptionist Kelly Daniel has been with us for more than 15 years.”

A couple procedures are done in the office, the endoscope, which is an examination of the small bowel and a fibrascan procedure for the liver.

Colonoscopies, examinations used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and the rectum, are very important, according to Maran. Those are also performed in the office.

“Anybody over age 50 should be examined for colon cancer,” he said.

He concluded with the three W’s. “Wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance,” he said.

Tennova Gastroenterology is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
