Newport police involved in two chases

Newport police are continuing their investigation into a Sunday morning shooting which sent a Newport man to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville.

Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults released a report Sunday filed by Newport Patrol Officer Lindsey Laughter. She said she responded to the Terrace Apartments on Terrace Way at 3:16 a.m., where Michael Messer, 48, no address given, said a semi-automatic handgun was on the hood of his truck and he was the one who had fired the weapon.

Laughter said she observed a male lying on the sidewalk between two buildings of the apartment complex. He was identified as Keith Levering, 29, no address given.

The officer said officers assisted Levering with his gunshot wound until First Call EMS arrived on the scene. The injured man was flown to the Knoxville facility by medical helicopter.

Newport Detective Scott Lamb interrogated Messer, however, no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
