Newport McDonald’s to undergo big changes over three months

Members of the Newport Planning Commission meeting gave approval Tuesday to plans to raze the current McDonald’s restaurant on Cosby Road and replace it with a new structure.

That project is planned for this fall and will take about three months.

Members were told the new structure will be longer and will have two lanes exiting, and one lane entering at the south side of the business. In addition, about a dozen additional parking spaces will be added and the outdoor playground will be removed.

The layout also will address the need for faster traffic at the drive-thru, to reduce the waiting line which now extends onto the roadway on occasion.

The body also approved a proposed modification to the current electronic sign resolution, which now will go to the Newport City Council for consideration. Such signs will be prohibited in the downtown area because Community Development Director Gary Carver suggested electronic signs do not fit in with the planned development of downtown.
