A man observed leaving the Cocke County Veterans Transport Service van, parked at the courthouse annex on Main Street in Newport on Wednesday, now faces charges.
Newport Patrol Officer Jessy Burgess was at SWAT training when he observed Corey Hazelwood, 29, Overlook Way, Newport, exiting the van. When he was approached, Hazelwood fled on foot but he was taken into custody in the Eastern Plaza Shopping Center after being tasered.
Hazelwood has a lengthy arrest record, primarily for drug offenses. Newport patrol officer Jordan Douglas said the behavior of Hazelwood on Wednesday suggested he was under the influence of methamphetamine.
Inside the van, officers found the dash and steering column had been destroyed in an apparent attempt to steal the vehicle.
Now Hazelwood faces charges of burglary of an auto, attempted theft of property over $1,000, resisting arrest, felony fleeing law enforcement, felony escape and public intoxication.
Douglas said Cocke County authorities also have filed felony escape charges against Hazelwood, who reportedly fled from a drug rehab facility but did not return to jail.
