Officers with the Morristown Police Department were dispatched to respond to a knife attack at the apartments on Chestnut Avenue in north Morristown just before 11:30 p.m. Friday night.  

The TBI reports that officers found a female victim, identified as Wendy Lea Pope (DOB 8/8/79), deceased inside of a vehicle. Officers located the victim’s husband, identified as Ronald Pope (DOB 5/8/71), inside the couple’s apartment.

He was armed with a handgun and refused to comply with verbal commands to drop the weapon.

At some point during the encounter, Pope reportedly raised the weapon at officers, resulting in four officers firing shots, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

 Three patrol officers and two investigators responded to the initial call.  None of the officers were injured.

Mr. Pope had a history of alleged domestic violence. The MPD confirmed an incidence of alleged abuse against her was reported in March. 

As per the department’s standard protocol, the Tenn Bureau of Investigations will conduct an independent inquiry in to the incident.
