Two hurt after pursuit

Two were injured in a Friday night pursuit in Cocke County which ended in a crash on Raines Road.

Cocke County Deputy James Cupp said he attempted a stop of Jeffrey Scott Shaffer, 47, Shields Ferry Road, Morristown, after seeing him driving erratically and at a high rate of speed on New Cave Church Road.

The subject fled, ignoring the blue lights and siren, continuing onto Raines Road while driving in a reckless manner at a high rate of speed and attempting to evade Cupp. After a short pursuit, Shaffer crashed into a parked car at 1092 Raines Road.

At that point Cupp conducted a felony arrest of Shaffer, who exited his auto and lay on the ground, complaining of back injuries.

Shaffer said he fled because his driving privileges are revoked. His passenger, Helena Camela Owen, 45, Coops Road, Newport, said she wanted to get out of the vehicle during the chase but Shaffer would not allow her to do so.

Both occupants of the auto were taken by First Call EMS to Newport Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Warrants now are on file charging Shaffer with evading arrest, felony reckless endangerment, kidnapping, driving on a revoked license, and simple possession of Suboxone.
