Traffic stop  leads to drug charges

A Cocke County man faces major charges following a traffic stop on Tuesday.

Cocke County Deputy James Cupp said he stopped Rodney Russell Campbell, 57, Fortune Way, Newport, after he was seen leaving a home documented for the sale of illegal narcotics. The subject was stopped after he was observed running through a stop sign. The officer determined Campbell was driving on a revoked license.

Campbell denied having illegal drugs, but Cupp says a subsequent search of the defendant revealed 35 baggies of powder cocaine, 11 baggies of marijuana, one baggie of methamphetamine, Oxycodone and crack cocaine. A total of $3,485 in cash was seized from Campbell. The officer said the seized drugs have a street value of $3,700.

The defendant was jailed on charges of possession of Schedule I, three counts possession of Schedule II, casual exchange of marijuana and driving on a revoked license.
