In a short and sweet meeting that lasted a total of 19 minutes, the Hamblen County Board of Education ran through some action items Tuesday night during its regularly scheduled meeting, just a month before schools start again.

The school board voted 7-0 to approve about $17,000 in roofing on West Elementary School and adopted a new policy that would allow students whose parents are school employees to remain in the zones in which their parents are employed and a bid to buy a new 2019 Ford maintenance vehicle for $45,600.

School officials said the West Elementary School funds are for architecture and design.

The new policy went through a second reading and was approved. The policy, discussed almost two months ago, creates a change where students can remain with their group of friends throughout their school career, allowing school employee parents to choose attendance zones for their children.

Previously, students could attend the school where their parent was employed, but once they finished that school would have to then attend the school they were zoned for by their home address. It was also limited to certified teachers.

Now, students will be able to attend the zone their parents work at, making sure they are not split from their group of friends they attended school with previously. The new policy also expands to all school employees and not just certified teachers.

Dr. Jeff Perry, school superintendent, brushed over briefly that the school’s operating budget would be up for a vote next week during the regularly scheduled Hamblen County Commission meeting and that school officials are still exploring options for a telehealth line for teachers and staff.

The board meeting happened just a week before the Hamblen County Commission will meet on June 18 to vote on approval for the 2019-2020 fiscal year proposed county budget, which includes about $104 million for the school system.

The board also heard about the calendar next month as school starts.

Teachers will return to work on Aug. 1 and there will be an in-service day on Aug. 2.

The first day of school will be on Aug. 5, but will be half a day. The first full day of school will be on Aug. 7.
