Porter's Tire Stores will be celebrating their 70th year in business in 2022 with a new expanded tire store at 1468 North Davy Crockett Parkway.

A groundbreaking was held Monday morning to celebrate the new location. Construction will take about a year to complete.

Porter's Tire Owner Roger Porter said that the new store is going to be a four-bay retail store on the front and a six-bay commercial shop on the back side.

“There’s going to be two separate buildings,” Porter said. “The retail store is for the smaller and normal stuff that we do in the day-to-day operations. The second building is for the bigger vehicles.”

“This new store is going to be replacing the store on 25 (at 2409 North Davy Crockett Parkway),” Porter said.

Over the almost 52 years of business, Porter said that the company has worked on keeping a good reputation.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to serve,” Porter said. “It’s the biggest project we’ve undertaken.”

The company has seven locations, including two in Morristown, on Davy Crockett Parkway and Buffalo Trail, a location on West Andrew Johnson Highway in Talbott, and locations in Greeneville, Johnson City, Rogersville and Tazewell.

Tire brands sold by Porter’s include BF Goodrich, Cooper, Firestone, Bridgestone, General Tire, Continental, Hancook, Kelly Springfield, Dunlop, Goodyear, Uniroyal, Michelin, Yokohama, Hercules, Nitto, Toyo and Mastercraft.

Established in 1952. Porter’s Tire Store began with a night of prayer by the founder Ayers Porter. Before Ayers was involved, the original store started out as an OK Recapper called Pickens and Thomas Tire.

It was located on Main Street in Morristown. The company has been family owned from the beginning.

In 2019, Porter Tire was named one of the six finalists in Tire Business Magazine’s “Brest Place to Work” contest.

Porter said the success of the business over seven decades has all to do with the people who work there and changing the opinions about what working in a tire store is like.

The company is now operated by the fourth generation of the Porter family.
