Judge Carter Moore on Monday heard a number of guilty pleas in Cocke County Circuit Court.
John Martin, 53, Jefferson Avenue, Newport, entered a plea to an aggravated assault charge, reduced from a charge of attempted second-degree murder. In August of last year, Martin struck John Abbadie over the head with an ax, after telling the victim “he was going to die.”
Martin was given a 10-year sentence but released on the time he has served. The balance of the term will be on supervised probation, and Martin may have no contact with Abbadie. Mark Hogate, 48, Emanuel Road, Newport, pled guilty to a number of recent thefts: a Ford farm tractor and other items from George Ailshie, along with an irrigation pump and a well pump, all from properties in the Point Pleasant community recently. The thefts all were reported in September. Hogate also faces charges in connection with the theft of Harley Davidson parts from Steve Anderson of Hamblen County. Hogate pleaded guilty to charges of theft over $1,000, burglary of a building, vandalism and theft. He was given a two year sentence, will serve a full year in jail, with the balance on probation. Hogate was ordered to make restitution, and the defendant also was given permission to attend a drug rehabilitation program while he is incarcerated. A codefendant has not resolved the charges against him.
