A North Carolina construction worker, who allegedly killed a former coworker at the Morristown Econo Lodge in March 2018 in a tool-related dispute, has been indicted by a Hamblen County grand jury for second-degree murder.

Jacob Thomas Marzullo, 39, allegedly took the life of Thomas Frederick Taylor. Marzullo came to Morristown because he believed Taylor had stolen his tools from a jobsite in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, police said at the time. Taylor, who has two siblings in this area and had been staying at the West Andrew Johnson Highway motel while working a job here, was 42.

Marzullo was arrested shortly after the homicide and has remained in the Hamblen County Jail ever since.

In another high-profile case, the grand jury indicted Matthew D. Phillips, a 20-year-old Bulls Gap man, for rape in the alleged October 2017 sexual assault at the alleged victim’s house in central Morristown. Phillips was taken into custody about a year later. Police were waiting on Tennessee Bureau of Investigation lab results, according to Detective Phil Hurst.

Marzullo maintains the rape never occurred and he does not know the woman who claimed she was raped. Hurst said he has biological evidence that links the defendant to the alleged sexual assault.
