Two separate incidents overnight in Jefferson County have law enforcement looking for a man in New Market considered armed and dangerous, while another man was taken into custody for a shooting in White Pine that authorities say was unrelated.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were onsite Thursday morning near Whitaker Road searching a thicket for a man they said conducted a carjacking at the Planet Fitness on Chapman Highway in Knoxville. The man was armed.
“We have him cornered,” Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Coffey said. “We have some K-9’s doing some tracking.”
By 11 a.m. the dogs had not caught a smell of the suspect, but law enforcement officers had spread out across the farmland near U.S. Highway 11E.
New Market Elementary was reportedly placed on soft lockdown in reaction to the search.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office first alerted the public about the armed carjacker around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The report stated the alleged carjacker was 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighed 150 pounds and was wearing a black polo shirt and black shorts. They cautioned the public not to approach the suspect and to immediately call 911.
Just hours later, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office made a second statement concerning a shooting on Spring Park Way in White Pine.
Late Wednesday night, officers responded to a shooting call and found a victim with multiple gunshot wounds who was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. The shooting suspect was located a little while later hiding in a nearby field and arrested, authorities said.
As of press time, the suspect’s name had not been released. Authorities said these were two unrelated incidents.
