One man is in custody and another is being sought in the assault of a Cocke County man.

Jerrod Turner, 33, Old 15th Road, Del Rio, told Cocke County Sgt. Max Laughter he rode with Meghann Elizabeth Hill, 40, Banks Road, Newport, and another female, and at 2 a.m. they stopped on Woodland Way in the Edwina community.

Near the Buddhist Peace Pagoda, they came upon a vehicle occupied by five males.

Turner says the males began to assault him with sticks and bats, resulting in serious facial, head and body injuries. He was robbed of $60 in cash, a cellphone and a pocketknife.

The victim identified two of the assailants as James Spence, 28, Banks Road, Newport, and Josh McKnight, 28, Filbert Street, Newport.

Laughter said both men at the time were already wanted on warrants.

After the attack on Turner, the assailants fled. Turner was able to make his way to the nearby home of Samuel Steutz, owner of Woodland Way.

After Laughter arrived on the scene, a white Honda Civic came up the private drive, and he conducted a traffic stop. McKnight and Spence both ran from the car into a wooded area. Spence was later located by Stuetz and taken into custody.

Spence was previously wanted on a probation violation, and now faces the additional charges of aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, theft and criminal trespassing.

McKnight is being sought on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, theft, criminal trespassing, and resisting stop halt and frisk.

Hill is being sought on a charge of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

Turner was taken to the Newport Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
