A 51-year-old Gray man died Tuesday in an accidental drowning at Cherokee Park, officials said.
Lt. David Cribley of the Hamblen County Sheriffs Department said the man and his elderly father came to Cherokee Lake to go fishing.
While the boat was in the water, it got away from the pair at the Cherokee Lake boat ramp and the 51-year-old man swam after it.
He swam 30- to 40-feet offshore then sank underwater, Cribley said.
The name of the deceased is being withheld until family is notified, authorities said.
