LDS Church creates Newport congregation

In February, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the creation of the Newport Branch, a congregation of 250 members residing in Newport and surrounding Lakeway Area communities.

The Newport Branch is located at 127 Western Plaza Way and is one of 9 Latter-day Saint congregations in the Knoxville Cumberland Stake, with a membership of about 4,000.

Todd Boeke, a Newport resident, serves as Newport Branch president. David Edmonds, of White Pine, and Brent Ford, of Dandridge, serve as counselors. The men will help President Boeke carry out the responsibility of ministering to the spiritual and temporal needs of the congregation.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a lay ministry, as locals serve voluntarily, without pay, and do so in addition to family, employment and other community responsibilities.

All are invited to attend services at 10 a.m., Sundays at 127 Western Plaza Way in Newport.
