A Kingsport man who was excavating into a hillside died Tuesday afternoon when the hillside collapsed onto the excavator he was using, crushing the cab.

Curtis Williamson, 43, of Kingsport, was removing dirt a hillside behind the location of Express Hauling on State Highway 70 North.

At 2:06 p.m., the hill that Williamson was excavating from collapsed on top of him, trapping him in the excavator. The road was closed until shortly after 5:30 p.m. when Williamson’s body was recovered. The Hawkins County Rescue Squad responded to the scene, along with Greer Performance, who tried to remove the dirt and rock. Tiger Towing of Bulls Gap and Lynn Hope Towing of Greeneville also responded to the scene to pull the excavator away.

According to reports, Express Hauling had been cutting back the hillside from the rear of the property for years. Other agencies responding included Hawkins County EMS, Hawkins County Emergency Management Agency, Church Hill Rescue Squad, Multi-Jurisdictional Rope Rescue Team, Striggersville VFD, Lakeview VFD, Persia VFD, Bulls Gap VFD, Rogersville Fire Department, Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office and Rogersville Police.
