The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating human remains found in a bag on the shores of Douglas Lake.
According to a press release, Jefferson County deputies were dispatched to Lake Ridge Drive in Dandridge around 4:30 p.m. Sunday to the report of a suspicious bag found on the lake shore.
The bag was discovered by a passerby walking along the lake, authorities said.
After opening it, deputies discovered it contained human remains.
Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Attorney General are investigating.
The body has been transported to the forensics center in Knoxville for further examination, the release stated.
Sheriff Coffey said investigators spent Monday on Douglas Lake with the assistance of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, searching for further evidence that may be related to “the recovery of the homicide victim.”
“This investigation is still in it’s preliminary stages and we will release further information as it becomes available,“ the sheriff said.
