Hole in the Road

Last week, the Tennessee Department of Transportation said the opening of the new State Route 66, which will run from Exit 4 off Interstate 81 to West Andrew Johnson Highway, has been delayed until spring of 2020. Two years ago, a portion of the embankment built to carry the road collapsed (shown above in a photo recently taken by Debbie Hyde). That led to a number of delays as construction workers have tried to stabilize the area. In addition, heavy winter rains have opened up other sinkholes further delaying the project. State officials indicate that once the connector is finished, the road will be an economic boon for Morristown.
