A Hawkins County man died early this morning in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 346, just north of the Surgoinsville town limits limits, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Trooper Jeremy Shelton identified the deceased as James S. Lawson, 59, Surgoinsville. Funeral arrangements for Lawson had not been announced in Morristown by late this morning.

Lawson, who was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup, was southbound on Highway 346 around 1:20 a.m. when his vehicle left the roadway on the right side in a straight stretch of roadway near the intersection with Highland Street. The pickup struck a culvert before colliding with the tree on the driver’s side, according to a preliminary crash report.
