A man who is a suspect in an Oct. 2 murder in Greeneville, along with a double homicide in Florida last night, was taken into custody this morning in Winter Haven, Florida, according to authorities.
Greeneville police said Stanley Eric “Woo Woo” Mossburg, 35, allegedly killed Christopher Scott Short outside of the Celebrity Coin Laundry in Greeneville. Mossburg was named on warrants charging him with first-degree felony murder, especially aggravated robbery and especially aggravated kidnapping in Short’s death.
Mossburg had been added to the TBI’s Most Wanted list, and a reward of up to $2,500 was being offered for information leading to his arrest. Greeneville authorities said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified Mossburg as the suspect with the help from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina.
Various agencies recently had been working with the U.S. Marshals’ Smoky Mountain Fugitive Task Force to locate the suspect, who police said should be considered armed and dangerous. Monday evening, authorities in Polk County, Florida said they believed Mossburg also was behind a double homicide in that county.
Sheriff Grady Judd said investigators believed Mossburg was still in that area and he advised residents to lock their doors.
Early this morning, Judd said his officers had maintained a perimeter overnight around a home in Winter Haven in the search for Mossburg, and early this morning the suspect was found hiding in the residence after a S.W.A.T. team tore out walls and a portion of the roof to find him.
Mossburg was arrested around 5:10 a.m. by the S.W.A.T. and the Polk County Sheriff’s Department said he had been barricaded alone in a house that belongs to an acquaintance.
According to Florida news reports, deputies found a truck that Mossburg apparently had been driving, hidden behind a home in Winter Haven. The neighborhood was locked down all night as the home was surrounded by S.W.A.T. team members.
Reports indicate a man came home from work Monday night to find Mossburg in his house and his two roommates, a man and woman, dead. Mossburg allegedly held the man captive, until the victim was able to escape early this morning. Mossburg was taken into custody shortly thereafter.
