A Cocke County Jail inmate who bolted from the courthouse as he was being escorted to the jail Monday afternoon was recaptured on Tuesday.

William “Billy” Hance, 47, Old Sevierville Highway, Newport, was handcuffed when he ran down the courthouse stairs and fled the building.

At about 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, the escaped inmate was taken into custody in the parking lot of a hotel on Cosby Road.

Officers had received a tip Hance had been seen getting out of a vehicle at the motel. Officers converged on the area and apprehended him.

Hance was being held on numerous charges stemming from a Sunday pursuit including kidnapping and numerous traffic violations.
