Editor’s Note: The names of the Holiday Hope Fund recipients have been changed to protect the identity of the family.
The Citizen Tribune Holiday Hope Fund not only helps families with children, they help the largely forgotten of our society.
Mabel had always been active.
That all changed in May, according to her husband, Gus.
“My wife fell on concrete in May and broke her tailbone,” Gus said. “She has gone downhill since.”
Gus isn’t doing well, either, suffering from pancreatic cancer. He has gone from 206 pounds down to 164 due to his illness.
While recovering from her injuries, Gus buys diapers and supplies to help keep her comfortable.
“She was one of those go-getters,” Gus said. “For her to get down like this, this breaks our hearts. There’s not much you can do. We’ve been together 48 years. For 42 of those years, she’s tried to get me to cook and bake, but I never would do it. Now, I’ve got to. I don’t have no other choice if we’re going to eat.”
They signed up for the Holiday Hope Fund a long time ago, but they had been able to get by until now.
Gus has put together various bicycles for many years.
“I helped with the Holiday Hope Fund baskets one year,” Gus said. “I also helped with the toys a couple of years. I’ve managed to volunteer from time to time. Now, I can’t do it anymore.”
“We have lived on prayers,” Gus said. “I belong to a family who believes in helping others. We always have.”
An estimated 1,500 families will get a Citizen Tribune Holiday Hope Fund food box including a turkey breast, fresh apples, oranges, potatoes, rolls, macaroni and cheese, brownie mix, sugar, flour, canned green beans, canned corn, canned peas and pinto beans. The box contains multiples of some of those items and the fresh produce comes bagged.
