A Cocke County motorcyclist was seriously injured Monday in a car/motorcycle collision in downtown Newport.
Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults said, “According to witnesses, the motorcycle was stopped at the stop sign on East Main Street, and started across Court Avenue when the SUV coming west on Main Street apparently did not see him and drove into the side of the motorcycle.”
Newport patrol officer Chris Silvers said he arrived on the scene to find William Stepp, 20, Bybee, lying on the roadway next to his motorcycle with foot and ankle injuries.
Freda Fallows, 76, Newport, said she had stopped at the intersection and then proceeded forward when she made contact with the motorcycle. Fallows said she did not see the cyclist until she had struck the bike.
Stepp, who was wearing a helmet, was taken by First Call EMS to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment.
Fallows was charged with failure to exercise due care.
