A Cocke County man faces charges after he allegedly rammed two vehicles including one operated by a Cocke County drug investigator, at 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Newport Sgt. Derek Wright said County Narcotics Captain David Robertson spotted James R. Ball, 42, River Road, Newport who was a passenger in a vehicle on Hiawassee Street, operated by Breanna Dockery, also of River Street.

Detective Robertson knew that Ball was wanted on felony warrants so he blocked in the vehicle operated by Dockery.

Soon thereafter, Cocke County Sheriff Chief Deputy C J Ball arrived on the scene in a vehicle owned by his father, former Newport Mayor Connie Ball.

He pulled beside the Dockery car so that the passenger could not open his door and escape on foot. But James Ball allegedly stepped on the gas pedal of the Dockery vehicle, as the driver jumped from the auto.

The suspect jumped into the driver’s seat, rammed the Robertson vehicle and continued to accelerate the SUV in an attempt to push the detective’s vehicle out of the way.

Then James Ball backed the vehicle into the auto operated by Chief Deputy Ball.

Eventually James Ball was taken into custody after both the Robertson and Ball vehicles had sustained damage.

He was jailed on charges of reckless driving, failure to yield, evading arrest, failure to exercise due care, two counts vandalism over $1,000, leaving the scene of an accident, felony reckless endangerment, and driving on a revoked license.

No injuries resulted from the incident.
