Working on cars and trucks has been a lifelong endeavor for Jonah Bunch.
What started as a hobby in his youth has become the realization of a dream – to turn his hobby into a full-time career.
Though Bunch Diesel Performance opened its doors in January in Bean Station, the shop officially held its grand opening on July 5. Inclement weather throughout the winter and spring - and the arrival of new equipment - led to the shop’s official opening six months later.
“We wanted to open (Bunch Diesel Performance) when we had better and warmer weather so people could come out,” Bunch said.
Bunch Diesel Performance is a full-service facility which offers several services for vehicles, including lift kits, engine and transmission work, turbo and injector installation and repair as well as fuel system, wheel and hitch installation and repair. Parts sales are also a part of Bunch’s shop.
Bunch has turned a side project on his property into a business. He said a great deal of hard work went into building his shop.
“I’ve done (repair work) part-time for about five years,” Bunch said. “I quit my job, and started doing it on a full-time basis from my yard.
“We needed a bigger shop, so we built the shop and opened it up in January.”
Neither weather nor a lack of work space has prevented Bunch from doing what is necessary for his customers.
“I built one shop at my house. I even did lift kits in my basement. I would even do some work outside in the rain,” he said.
Bunch also said knowing the area and his clientele determined the services he offers.
“We don’t do much with preventative maintenance, but we do oil changes,” he said. “We mainly do high performance suspension work in the diesel industry.
“Here in Morristown, most people do a lot of auto work themselves, so we sell a lot of parts.”
Even though Bunch has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Carson-Newman University, the former teacher said he has been around cars and trucks for as long as he can remember.
“When I was in high school, I worked on my buddy’s truck. I have always been fooling around with vehicles,” he said.
Bunch Diesel Performance specializes in diesel trucks. Nevertheless, the shop also works on high performance cars...
“I mainly specialize in Duramax and Cummins (engines), and lift kits on cars,” Bunch said. “I generally do lift kits on anything.
I work on Mustangs, and I just put turbo on a Subaru WRX.”
Bunch Diesel Performance is truly a family endeavor. Bunch’s brothers have helped out on many occasions at the shop, including one who brings a unique perspective to vehicles.
“My brothers and I have been working on vehicles for years,” Bunch said. “I have a brother with a mechanical engineering degree from (University of Tennessee-Chattanooga), and he helps me out.
“It’s a family affair.”
Bunch is confident in his ability to turn any truck – or car – into a sleek, high performance machine.
“If it goes fast, or you can lift it up, I like to play with it,” he said.
