Bakery barks up the right tail

Megan Wilkinson, center, cuts the ribbon last week for her business Barkery Tails, a bakery for pooches and pets that is in downtown Morristown. Wilkinson is celebrating her first year of business.

A dog named Coco led Megan Wilkinson to her business on West Main Street in downtown Morristown.

“I got led down here by an insane rabbit hole,” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson celebrated her first year open this week of her shop, Barkery Tails, which sells custom made baked treats for dogs, cats and a variety of pets.

She celebrated the event by having a ribbon cutting, held by the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce.

As everyone gathered in her shop, she told the story about how she got into the pet baking business and it was all because of Coco.

Coco wasn’t just any dog. She was Megan’s dog and she had problems with hip dysplasia and arthritis since she was nearing the end of her life.

Wilkinson tried everything from pills and other traditional ways of helping ease Coco’s pain, who passed away last year.

But then she found something.

“I started researching and it led down this rabbit hole of food,” she said.

So, she started baking foods for dogs. One of her first things to bake was a blueberry banana treat. Blueberries act as an inflammatory and bananas promote energy.

But, it didn’t stop there. Friends started asking her to make treats for them and it kept going.

“That led me here,” Wilkinson said.

She makes a variety of fur baby treats, all of them made to help the pet with ailments or just to keep the pet healthy.

The store is also filled full of accessories for pets such as toys.

Pet owners can order fur baby cupcakes, Halloween treats or even custom made birthday cakes for dogs.

Another item for the store is that they also provide pet photos on Saturdays. The next photo shoot will be on Sept. 26.

Her store is open Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Mondays she does delivery.
