In support of local efforts to minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, event organizers have cancelled the Morristown-Hamblen Hospital Foundation GALA fundraising event planned for Sept. 25.
Members of the GALA committee expressed gratitude for the community and patrons’ understanding.
Although the in-person event will not take place, the hospital will still receive an important piece of medical equipment, which is usually done with funding from the Gala.
A grant from the premier Gala sponsor, Jefferson Federal Charitable Foundation, will fund the purchase of an ultrasound for intravenous (IV) line placement for the clinical services at MHHS.
Each year more than 43,000 individuals seek care in the hospital’s emergency department.
Many of these patients require IV placement to administer fluids and medications critical to their recovery. The ultrasound equipment guides clinicians by visualizing the a patient’s vascular anatomy and identifying the best possible location to insert an IV in patients with veins that may be small or difficult to access.
The new equipment will be installed by the end of this year.
In addition to recognizing the premier Gala sponsor, the MHHS Gala committee honors the recipient of the 2020 Exceptional Commitment to Healthcare Award: Tom C. Thompson, MD, FACS. Dr. Thompson is a general surgery specialist at Surgical Associates of East Tennessee in Morristown. He has been practicing medicine for more than 25 years and is receiving the award for his dedication to his patients and his community.
Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System provides quality healthcare to residents in an eight-county service area, and is the only hospital in the Lakeway area. The Morristown-Hamblen Hospital Foundation raises funds through the generosity of Foundation donors, community members and sponsors at the annual GALA event.
Members of the public can support the hospital foundation and become a “Champion for Healthcare” by visiting MorristownHamblen.com/giving/ and clicking the blue ‘donate’ button. Donors can dedicate a tribute gift in honor of Dr. Thompson or any physician, family member, friend or co-worker who has made a special difference in their lives.
