The holidays played havoc with the annual Seals vs. Biery basketball game held at the Boys & Girls Club Friday.
B&G Club Executive Director John Seals said that his daughters were Black Friday Christmas shopping and other family members were in Kansas to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Meanwhile, members of Max Biery’s family, including those from western Pennsylvania, an hour east of Pittsburgh and Colorado made it in to the Lakeway Area for a pickup game amongst other family members. The Pennsylvania clan drove seven and a half hours to Tennessee while the Colorado clan flew in.
The game started many years ago when the women of both the Seals and Biery families went Black Friday Christmas shopping. The men decided to play basketball.
Seals made the Boys & Girls Club available for the annual game and a tradition was born.
“This year, my son and daughter-in-law are in Kansas and all of the girls decided to go shopping,” Seals said. “I’m the lone Seals.”
The friendship began when both Bill Seals, John’s father, and Max Biery were friends during college. Both men served with the Boys & Girls Club of Morristown, Bill as executive director and Max as president of the board of directors.
John Seals, current Boys and Girls Club of Morristown executive director, said that the families had played for seven years before COVID-19 cancelled the last two meetings. This year’s meeting was the ninth time.
Many years, there was a kids’ game involving the younger members of the families. This year’s game marked 11 members of the Biery family playing ball. At the end of the game, the men and basketball players went to Chik-fil-a for lunch while the women went to the Tea Room.
