Return from fall break means focus on books for remainder of semester

Hey, Trojans! Hope your fall break was as amazing as you hoped. Take this next half of the semester seriously and let’s accomplish greatness in our academics. Parents and students are reminded there will be a 1 p.m. dismissal for students Wednesday, Oct. 23. Grade cards for the first nine weeks will also be distributed this week.

Students, FAFSA is now open for all seniors. FAFSA is a financial aid program that helps seniors in high school enroll in college, so don’t take this too lightly. All students of any income level are required to complete FAFSA if they intend to attend college.  If you need assistance towards completing the FAFSA, call 423-327-1600 ext. 1010 to schedule an appointment with Niswonger Care Counselor Emily Emerick.

Seniors, Nov. 14 will be a FAFSA meeting frenzy for the counseling office. Counseling will be available from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the counseling office to assist with the FASFA completions for any seniors and parents who are having trouble setting it up.

Students throughout the week will be visiting their Major Clarity accounts to take career aptitude tests and explore careers.

Seniors, the Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Programs are now available. The programs provide financial assistance for those who are in financial need, or those who have proven perseverance for overcoming personal adversity. Scholarship criteria also include high school graduation in spring/summer of 2020, demonstrate financial need, commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree, and United States citizenship. View the website to fill out information if you fit the criteria. Talk to your counselor if you have any questions or concerns. The scholarship deadline is Oct. 25.

Seniors, the Heisman High School Scholarship is now open and available to seniors. This scholarship honors both male and female high school seniors who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. They must have at least a 3.0 GPA and participate in at least one school sponsored sport. Applications must be completed on-line at: Contact your school counselor for more information. The scholarship deadline is Oct. 29.

The Voice of Democracy scholarship is now available for students. Awards are offered on the local, state and national levels. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “What Makes America Great.” The scholarship program is open to grades 9-12. Applications are available in the counseling office. The scholarship deadline is Oct. 31.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. One hundred and fifty Coca-Cola scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship. See the counseling office for more information.

Students, Governor’s School for the Arts applications are due in the counseling office by Nov. 20. See Ms. Byrd in the counseling office if you have any questions.

Students, yearbooks are now on sale at They will be $80 until Jan. 1, and after that they will be $90 until distributed. Parents, senior ads are also for sale in the yearbook. Senior ads can vary between $50 and $275 depending the size of the ad. Senior ads are due by Nov. 15, so make your payments by then if you are interested.

The junior varsity football team will play at Dobyns-Bennet High School Monday, Oct. 21.

The Morristown West cross country team will race in the annual regionals I-AAA meet in Gray Tennessee Thursday, Oct.24.

The varsity football team will play against Bearden Friday. Oct. 25.
