A Morristown man classified as a violent sex offender was arrested at the Fairview-Marguerite Elementary School field day on Thursday after he allegedly drew attention to himself by causing a disturbance, according to the Morristown Police Department.
Sex offenders like Michael Scott Hance, 43, are supposed to get written approval from the school system before attending events on school grounds. Hance didn’t have a permission slip, according to officer Josh Akard.
Hance, who lives on Embassy Drive a few blocks from the school, was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in 2003 when he was 27 years old, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. He was released from prison in 2010.
During the field-day events, officer Cory Harrison received a telephone call indicating that Hance was walking between parked vehicles and had been involved in arguments with students’ parents. Police apparently didn’t know Hance was a sex offender before he was questioned.
