Newport Grammar delays start of school

Newport Grammar School announced Saturday a change of plans in the school’s reopening.

Director Sandy Burchette announced a decision has been made to delay the first day of school until Monday, Aug. 17.

Registration is set for Tuesday, Aug. 11.

More than 80 students in Putnam County are quarantined since the first week of classes after a student tested positive for COVID-19.

Other students who were in close contact with the student have been told to quarantine for 14 days.

An additional seven teachers and staff, and a bus driver, are also quarantined due to a positive test or coming into close contact with someone who tested positive.

Many of the contacts occurred outside of school or before the academic year began on Aug. 3, the district said.
