Five Lakeway counties are currently rated in the High Risk category of COVID Community levels according to data released by the Center for Disease Control.
Hamblen, Hawkins, Grainger, Hancock and Jefferson counties are all listed as High Risk. Greene, Cocke and Claiborne counties are in the medium risk range.
To determine a community’s COVID level, the CDC looks at three metrics:
• New COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past 7 days
• The percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients
• Total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days
According to the Tennessee Department of health, Hamblen County is at a daily case rate of 37.2 per 100,000 residents over the period of July 10 through July 16 and 38.5 per 100,000 from July 3 to July 16.
The mid-summer increase follows a pattern from the last two summers that saw Hamblen County COVID rates skyrocket in late July of 2020 and late July of 2021.
The CDC recommends that anyone in a High Risk community wear a well-fitting mask while indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
Grainger County, according to the state department of health is at 35.5 case per 100,000 residents while Hancock County is at 34.7. Hawkins County is at 33.5 per 100,000 residents and Jefferson County is highest in the area at 40.4, according to the CDC.
