Roland and Kennetha Williams Zitt will celebrate 40 years of marriage Sunday, April 11.
As the story goes, Roland had accepted an assignment by MAHLE to help establish the Morristown plant. One day at the office, Roland saw a picture of Kennetha (Kenny) on the desk of Celia Williams, Kenny’s mother and head nurse at MAHLE. A man of fine taste, Roland wasted no time and asked his future mother-in-law about her gorgeous daughter. Celia was happy to introduce Kenny to the handsome young German, and soon, the two were in love and Roland’s short-term American assignment turned into a lifetime.
Times were different then. Interracial relationships were not common, but Roland and Kenny were bold in their love and chose to be together. They married, first at the Hamblen County Courthouse, and a few months later, at a church in Stuttgart, Germany. They vowed to stand by one another, come what may. In this spirit, they built a life in Morristown rich with family, friendships, and community. Their children have been especially inspired by their love and partnership.
In lieu of a party, their children (plus spouses and grandchildren) will celebrate them at home with a meal and lots of laughter.
They are the parents of a son, Patrick (Melissa) Zitt and their children, with sons Elijah, 4, and Samuel, 2; daughter, Michelle (Dustin) Zitt Brooks, with their daughter Romi, 1; and son Daniel (fiancee Jamie King) Zitt.
