Walters State Community College also sponsors many cultural events each year that are open to the community, including special speakers, play performances, musicals, choir performances and concerts. Many of these events are free.
The WSCC Music and Drama department directs musicals and dramas that include students and community members in each cast and production crew. Performances are in the theatre of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex. In 2007, the music program was honored with the TBR Academic Excellence and Quality Award, one of the board’s highest honors. Five students were selected to be part of the 2011 American Choral Directors Honors Choir.
Many students in the performing arts receive scholarships to continue their studies at public and private four year institutions. Global Connections, the college’s international education initiative, brings worldclass educational and entertainment experiences to all Walters State campuses. Most performances are open to the public and young audiences are welcome. These events range from a world champion Native American hoop dancer to African drum and dance troupes.
Community members are invited to join the Walters State Community Chorale. The chorale does not require an audition; the only requirement is a love for chorale music. Practices are held weekly with a performance scheduled each semester.
