ntown Gallery is excited to present an upcoming exhibition curated by New
York artist\, Joel Carreiro. \nNovember’s exhibit will feature video
and other works by three artists: Matthew
Garrison\, Yeon Jin Kim\, and Chris Miner. \nThe artists in B
ased on a True Story use narrative in their works in a variety of way
s. \nChis Miner’s videos include autobiographical fragments\, rumina
tive monologues family history\, dramatic events\, and sometimes allegoric
al or iconic elements. He often appears in his works as a version of himse
lf and sometimes adopts other personae\, complicating the author/character
relationship and problematizing the reliability of the narration. His wor
ks vary greatly but always dig into crucial issues of meaning\, orientatio
n\, faith\, doubt and human relationship. \nMatthew Garrison’s video
s also complicate the issue of the real and the fictional\, combining\, fo
r example\, documentary footage from the Iraq war with sequences from D.W.
Griffiths films. His huge photographic works show thousands of empty room
s pulled from website chat rooms\, begging the stories of these nameless p
articipants in “social media”. Similarly his video sculpture of a wishing
well summons the wishes represented by the coins thrown by countless unkno
wn dreamers. \nYeon Jin Kim makes scroll drawings hundreds of feet l
ong and builds models and sets out of common household materials\, which s
he then films to make narrative videos. Often a destabilized point of view
is established by the placement of the camera in unconventional locations
\; hidden in a small handmade train pulled slowly past the drawings and mo
dels or falling-floating above the scenes. The settings for her stories ra
nge from a city-sized spaceship to a forest peopled by creatures and hybri
ds resulting from altered evolutionary trajectories\, but these imagined w
orlds always refer back to our own. \nPlease join us
