DESCRIPTION:
Art Underfoot the annual Hooked Rug Show at the McMinn Count
y Living Heritage Museum will be on exhibit March 4-28\, 2013.
\n
Rug
hooking is a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric
through a stiff woven base such as burlap\, linen\, or rug warp. The loop
s are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet hook. In its
earliest years\, rug hooking was a craft of poverty. Poor women began look
ing through their scrap bags for materials to employ in creating their own
home-made floor coverings. The modern preference for using only cut wool
strips in hooked rugs originated with Pearl McGown in the 1930s and the cr
aft has seen a resurgence in popularity and is now viewed as form of fine
art.
\nIf you are interested in learning more about this craft\, a Ho
ok-In workshop will be held March 8th and 9th. Registration forms for the
Hook-In are available at www.livingheritagemuseum.com.
\n
The Museum
is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
\n
Contact:Amy B
