ng a “brown bag” lunch
\n
In a Sept. 12 lecture based on his new book
\, Rebels on the Border\, Dr. Aaron Astor will discuss the Civil
War experience in the highly contested and bloodiest of border states\, Ke
ntucky and Missouri. Following the war\, former slaves transformed their
kin and social networks of resistance against slavery into securing electo
ral participation and building institutions\, thus prompting a violent whi
te reaction that resulted in a political realignment of Kentucky Bluegrass
and “Little Dixie” Unionists with Missouri Confederates to stifle the pol
itical ambitions of former slaves. Aaron Astor is an associate professor
of history at Maryville College.
\n
The program is free and open to t
he public. The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History C
enter\, 601 S. Gay Street\, Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a “Bro
wn Bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available. For
