CIVIL WAR READING AND DISCUSSION PROGRAM BEGINS AT MORRISTOWN LIBRARY
First part of series scheduled to take place Thursday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m., focusing on “Imagining War”
Morristown, Tenn. – Beginning Thursday, Feb. 7, Morristown-Hamblen Public Library will host Making Sense of the American Civil War, a scholar-led reading and discussion program. This program is organized as a five-part series of conversations that aim to get below the surface of familiar stories about the Civil War battles to explore the complex challenges brought on by the war. The discussions will be lead by Dr. Nancy Schurr, professor of history at the University of Tennessee.
The conversation begins with Geraldine Brooks’ novel March, a meditation on America as it faces the plague of war. Brooks tells its story through the characters of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved Little Women, but shifts the attention to the father of these famed sisters, Reverend March. The novel compares fiction and firsthand testimony from Alcott herself to illuminate the challenges war presents to individuals’ beliefs.
Through the eyes of Reverend March, we will begin to understand the confusion and the turmoil facing individuals amongst the nation’s chaos, as they are thrust into battle both on the field and with themselves. Both the fictional story of March and the non- fictional accounts detailed from Alcott’s diary unravel the dramatic impact the war had in molding personal experiences.
“Imagining War” is part of a five-part series that will dive into truly making sense of the breadth and depth of the American Civil War. Other towns which have hosted the ten-week series include Chattanooga, Memphis, and Clarksville.
The series will be available at the Morristown-Hamblen Public Library on the following topics and dates:
Feb. 21: Choosing Sides – The primary documents discussed in this conversation present the reader with the opportunity to see through the eyes of people who were firsthand dealing with the notions of justice, honor, duty, loyalty and hypocrisy.
March 7: Making Sense of Shiloh – There’s always more than one side to every story, and the horrific Battle of Shiloh is no exception. This conversation dives deeper than the facts and figures of the battle itself, but instead explores the shattering impact the battle had upon Americans in the Civil War by looking at a variety of battlefield perspectives.
March 21: The Shape of War – A combination of three readings demonstrates the varying interpretations of the importance of Antietam then challenges the reader to shift the focus from the course of the battle and its ramifications to the suffering of the individuals and the way death was confronted.
April 4: War and Freedom – This final set of readings focus on the experience of the immediate emancipation of four million slaves. While few at the time imagine the institution of slavery being abolished as quickly as it was, the selections of the conversation don’t discredit the process and struggles of securing freedom and that the full significance of the war is still not complete today.
Making Sense of the American Civil War is presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.
The Tennessee program is presented by Humanities Tennessee, an organization created in 1973 that is dedicated to developing a sense of community through educational programs in the humanities across Tennessee. The series is part of Civil War, Civil Rights, Civil Discourse, a project of Humanities Tennessee that seeks to equip Tennesseans to think deeply about the context of social and political divisions from the Civil War to the present.
All discussions will be held in the Magazine Room of the Morristown-Hamblen Library from 6-8 p.m. To register for the program, please stop by the Main Floor Circulation Desk for a form and a book pack containing the books discussed in the lecture series. The program will be limited to 24 participants, due to the number of book packs available for check out. For more information visit www.morristownhamblenlibrary.org

More than 180 cakes have been entered in three divisions: All Occasion, Wedding, and Single Cupcake. Bakers of all ages and skill sets are testing their talents for the benefit of Knox County’s Imagination Library.

From a bubble bath-loving M&M to the Starship Enterprise, attendees are likely to see just about anything made out of flour, sugar and butter. But it is not just a feast for the eyes. Participants can bite into some of the tastiest samples from local bakers and enjoy a milk shooter from Cruze Dairy Farms. And most of the cakes are for sale. In addition to the competition cakes, there is a cash and carry bake sale with all kinds of goodies. Families can enjoy children’s crafts and cupcake decorating as well. While professionals judge the categories, attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite cake in the People’s Choice Awards.
“The Great Cake Bake is a wonderful event that shows how the entire community can come together to celebrate creativity and imagination for the important purpose of education,” commented Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett. “Educating our children begins with parents, and the Imagination Library is an excellent way to support our families as a child’s first teacher.”

Knox County Public Library to present Dr. James Stovall, editor of Seeing Suffrage, a collection of photographs on the Woman Suffrage Procession
Some say it was the world’s first media event. On March 3, 1913, photographers from all over were invited to take pictures as thousands of women and men marched through the streets of Washington DC in support of voting rights for women. The event’s organizer, Alice Paul, believed that if the world could see the kaleidoscope of color, people and ideas, they would be impressed, and the issue of suffrage would rise to a higher plane.
On Sunday March 3, 2013, the 100th anniversary of the Woman Suffrage Procession, Knox County Public Library presents Dr. James Glen Stovall, author of Seeing Suffrage. The program starts at 2:00 pm in the auditorium of the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street Admission is free.
Seeing Suffrage is a collection of the most interesting and informative photographs taken at the march. Dr. Stovall, Edward J. Meeman Distinguished Professor of Journalism in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media at UT, discovered the photographs while doing general research on women’s suffrage, and as a journalist, was fascinated by the way Alice Paul used the media available at the time to forward her cause.
In addition to Dr. Stovall’s presentation, the public is invited to view the famous letter in which Mrs. Burn admonished her son, Tennessee State Representative Harry T. Burn, to “be a good boy” and vote for suffrage. His vote in favor broke the deadlock and the 19th amendment to the US Constitution became law. The Burn letter is a temporary part of a larger exhibition on suffrage in the Voices of Opportunity section of the East Tennessee History Center’s permanent exhibit.
Art Underfoot the annual Hooked Rug Show at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum will be on exhibit March 4-28, 2013.
Rug hooking is a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet hook. In its earliest years, rug hooking was a craft of poverty. Poor women began looking through their scrap bags for materials to employ in creating their own home-made floor coverings. The modern preference for using only cut wool strips in hooked rugs originated with Pearl McGown in the 1930s and the craft has seen a resurgence in popularity and is now viewed as form of fine art.
If you are interested in learning more about this craft, a Hook-In workshop will be held March 8th and 9th. Registration forms for the Hook-In are available at www.livingheritagemuseum.com.
The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 6th Annual Mountain Man Memorial March & Marathon
will be held on April 20 in Gatlinburg. The annual marathon
pays tribute to the sacrifices made by American service members and their
families over the years.
The event consists of a full 26.2-mile marathon, a 13.1-mile half-marathon, and a 10-kilometer run. The event also includes a 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile march in
various divisions, heavy and light, military or civilian, and team or individual.
Medical personnel and water checkpoints are offered along the way, and
participants will be given a meal ticket for lunch. Official rules and additional
event details can be found on the Mountain Man Memorial March website.
In addition to the march/run, April 19 and 20 have been declared “Mountain Man Memorial March and & Gold Star Family Weekend” by the City of Gatlinburg, with the Gold Star families of fallen service members gathering to remember and honor their sons and daughters, parents, wives and husbands of service members of any branch of service who lost their life while on active duty.
The marathon is a wonderful opportunity to give thanks to those who paid the
ultimate sacrifice for our country. Participation in the march/run is not required to attend; all are welcome to come together on this day to cheer on the runners and help honor those who have fought and died to protect the United States of America.
The Mountain Man Memorial March is a nonprofit event that raises money for
scholarship grants to Gold Star Family members. Donations can be made online at www.mountainmanmemorialmarch.com
