      10:00 am – 10:00 pm

ST. PAUL, Va. – The first-ever Clinch River Mandolin Festival takes place Sept. 27, 2014, in St. Paul, Va., on the banks of the scenic Clinch River, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The festival will feature a mandolin competition, music jams and mandolin lessons. Crafts and concessions will be available for purchase during the event and the festival will have a wine and beer garden. Competition prizes, including a $500 cash prize, will be awarded.

The group Grasstowne will perform its unique, aggressively modern bluegrass music. The band’s first two projects reached #1 and #2 respectively on the National Bluegrass charts. Its album “The Road Headin’ Home” was named Album of the Year in 2008. Grasstowne was nominated for Grammys for Song of the Year, and its members have been nominated for Grammys for Mandolin Player of the Year and Bass Player of the Year. Grasstowne member Alan Bibey will judge the mandolin competition.

Competition registration remains open online until midnight, Sept. 20. The website is www.clinchrivermandolinfestival.org. Entrants may also register in person the day of the festival, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The fee to compete is $15 for adults.

Pre-sale tickets for entrance into the festival are discounted at $8 for adults ($10 at the gate). Tickets are $5 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and younger are admitted for free. These are available for purchase online at www.clinchrivermandolinfestival.org or may be purchased in person at C.R. Pate & Company or Design Printers in St. Paul.

Mandolin lessons include beginning, intermediate and advanced acoustic strings, as well as shape note singing; these workshops cost $5 each. Free informal jam sessions will be open to all musicians.
