Jefferson tops East Ridge in gridiron opener
JEFFERSON CITY — Jefferson Middle and East Ridge opened the 2014 Middle Eight Conference football season Tuesday evening with a battle in Jefferson City, with the homestanding Elks pulling out a 24-6 victory over the Bears.
Playing one week earlier than the rest of the league due to the Jefferson County Fair being next week when the season was set to open, the Elks scored on their first possession of the game and never looked back.
Jefferson led 8-6 after one period and upped their lead to 16-6 by halftime. The lead swelled to 24-6 by the end of the third period before the two teams had a scoreless fourth frame.
Ben Royster tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the win for the Elks, one going to Reed Manley and the other to Jamal Spradling. Blain Taylor added a rushing touchdown for Jefferson, and they converted all three two-point conversions in the victory.
East Ridge’s lone score came on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Connor Jordan to Mason McDaniel. The two-point conversion failed.
