Pirates double up Astros 4-2
GREENEVILLE — The Bristol Pirates, the Appalachian League’s newest addition, visited the Greeneville Astros for the very first time on Sunday night at Pioneer Park. It turned out to be a good first trip for the Pirates as they left with a 4-2 victory.
The Pirates (4-12) took advantage of some early opportunities and jumped ahead right from the beginning. They scored three runs on no hits in the first inning.
With one out, the Pirates loaded the bases with two walks and a fielding error. Then, the next batter was walked to score their first run. Finally, before the inning was over, another Astros fielding error allowed two more runs to score to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
The next two innings went scoreless for both teams. Then, in the fourth inning, Pablo Reyes hit a RBI single to push the Pirates advantage to 4-0.
In the sixth inning, the Astros (7-10) finally got a chance to cut into the lead. Antonio Nunez led off with a single, and Jason Martin followed with a RBI triple for the Astros’ first score. Then, Martin scored on a Juan Santana ground out to cut the Pirates lead in half at 4-2.
The next inning, the Pirates called in reliever Cesilio Pimentel who proceeded to pitch three scoreless innings to close the game and earn the save. Meanwhile, Junior Lopez picked up the win after pitching four innings and surrendering two runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
