Celebrating volunteers are Edith Carmack, HR specialist, Elaine Rose, volunteer services manager, Carol Wentworth, volunteer of the year, Sharon Hayes, volunteer services coordinator.

Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System recently honored hospital volunteers and chaplains for their service in 2013.

During 2013, 55 active volunteers gave more than 15,000 hours of service. MHHS volunteers have given more than 234,000 cumulative hours of service since the hospital’s volunteer program began in 1956.

All volunteers received service pins. Additional awards were:

• Volunteer of the Year — Carol Wentworth

• Junior Volunteer of the Year — Kylor Debord

• Volunteer with Most Cumulative Hours of Service — Florence Stubblefield

• Volunteer with Most Hours of Service in 2013 — Barbara Cobb

“These volunteers have our deepest appreciation for sharing their time and talents,” said Elaine Rose, manager of Volunteer Services. “They make a world of difference in our patients’ lives.”

MHHS volunteers provide a variety of services at the hospital. They assist patients and caregivers in the Cancer Resource Center (a joint program with the American Cancer Society), work in the day surgery, CCU and emergency department waiting areas, deliver Imagination Library books to parents of newborns, help in the chemo infusion area, and work in the JBC gift shop, reception area, and more.

The chaplains, who also serve the hospital, were honored at a celebration breakfast where they were recognized for the “comfort, counsel, care, help and hugs” they provide to visitors, patients, and family members who are in need of spiritual support. Jonathan Bewley was named Chaplain of the Year at the breakfast.

“We are so blessed with our chaplain service. Our chaplains are selfless, and give so much in service to our hospital,” Rose said. “Each word spoken, each bowed head means so much to our patients and families.”

Individuals interested in the opportunity to help others while “giving back” to the community can consider volunteering at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System.
