DAR awards scholarships
The Morristown Samuel Doak Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution scholarships were awarded by Mary Jane Coleman, Samuel Doak Chapter’s scholarship chairman recently.
The scholarship is offered to senior students at Morristown-Hamblen High School East, Morristown-Hamblen High School West, Jefferson County High School and Grainger High School.
The winner of the scholarship at each school is awarded $500 for higher education.
Katelyn Lane of Morristown East High is the daughter of Jerry and Karen Lane.
She has a 4.35 GPA, is active in Beta Club, choir and is in Morristown Hamblen High School East Who’s Who Class of 2014.
Lane also received the Samuel Doak chapter Good Citizen Award and has won three DAR poster contests.
She has been accepted to Carson-Newman University and plans to become a nurse.
The winner from Grainger High School, Amber Farmer is the daughter of Tony and Missy Farmer.
She has a 4.0 GPA and she is involved in Beta Club, basketball and track teams. She took dual enrollment classes her junior and senior years with a focus on math and science.
She also volunteers at her church and the Knoxville Rescue Ministry.
Farmer will attend Carson-Newman Uni-versity, where she plans to study nursing and will run track and cross county.
Katie Inman from Jefferson County High School is the daughter of Edwin and Penny Inman.
She has a 4.18 GPA and has taken Advanced Placement and honors classes throughout high school.
Inman is on the forensics team and has won four national titles on the school Dance Team. She was also in the senior play. She is active in her church. Inman plans to major in mass communications at Middle Tennessee State University.
To be eligible for the scholarship, each applicant must be a citizen of the United States, enclose a copy of their school transcript record and must attend, or plan to attend an institution of higher learning.
The applicant must obtain a letter of recommendation from their school principal and submit an essay of 300 words in which the student describes the historical significance and relevancy of the DAR organization.
