Morristown East’s Rachel Cutshaw bats during Tuesday’s 10-7 win over Morristown West at J.C. Wild Park.

Morristown East came from behind by scoring seven runs in the top of the fourth inning Tuesday afternoon at J.C. Wild Park and then held on for a 10-7 victory over Morristown West and a sweep of the season series between the cross-town rivals.

The Lady Canes trailed 4-3 entering the fourth but put together six hits and scored six of the runs after two outs for their ninth win of the season.

West managed single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames but couldn’t get closer than the final margin.

East, which has lost 10 times, improved to 6-3 in Inter Mountain Conference action while the Lady Trojans fell to 9-12 for the season and are now even at 5-5 in league play.

Lady Canes coach Robin Vannoy said, “I was really proud of the girls today. Most of the runs we got came with two outs and that means we were getting some hits when we needed them.

“We hit the ball through the lineup and we had base runners in every inning even though we didn’t score in five of them,” she added. “That’s what we have to do to keep winning is keep moving runners when we get them on base.”

East collected 13 hits led by Mackenzie King with a pair of singles and a double. Aleia Swint, Casi McDaniel and Sara Dent all got two singles with McDaniel, Dent and Amanda Turley having doubles.

The Lady Trojans also hit the ball well, banging out 10 hits. Sarah Fryman led the way with a home run and single while Natalie Martin and Blake Shultz also had two hits. Kaley Muncy and Shultz had doubles.

Ashlyn Pillion picked up the mound verdict over Jessi Tinsley, who probably deserved a better fate as eight East runs were unearned.

The Lady Canes struck for three in the top of the first inning. Swint and King had hits to open the frame and both scored as Rachel Cutshaw reached on an error. Cutshaw came around to score on another throwing error.

West took advantage of two hit batters and a walk to load the bases in the bottom of the second with Camryn Ward and Savannah Edmonds delivering run-scoring singles.

The Lady Trojans captured the lead in the home half of the third. Tinsley reached on an error and the run scored on Martin’s hit. Muncy then doubled in Martin to put West up 4-3.

In the fourth, Tinsley retired the first two batters on routine ground outs before King doubled to left. Cutshaw’s single plated the tying run before Katelyn Davidson got a hit. The go-ahead run scored as Pillion reached on a throwing error.

McDaniel walked to load the bases and Dent doubled in two runs. Lauryn Bruce’s hit scored a run and Turley came through with another double for the final two markers, making it 10-4.

In the bottom of the inning, Shultz doubled to left and scored on a ground out by Katie Lakas. The Lady Trojans took another run off in the fifth when Martin had an infield hit and wound up scoring on an error.

West’s final run came in the sixth on Fryman’s one-out home run.
